Social Rape after the Physical Rape

Geetha B. U.

Rape is the most heinious crime. Worst if it is gang rape. A women is physically ravaged, mentally humiliated , socially ostracised. Many women die after this crime because of infections she contacts due to the act. If she survives the whole incident is hushed up because she and her parents are scared about the social repercussions. If she goes ahead and files a complaint with the police a different story emerges. She herself is blamed. What was she wearing, what time was she out and why, who was with her, how was she behaving….did she instigate the rapist by scolding them when they just teased her….the blame is squarely placed on her shoulders.

Along with treatment, she is asked innumerable questions…then the hunt for victims. Once arrested , she has to identify them…will a women be capable of remembering those faces?? What if they have covered their faces?? The court procedures, medical tests, humiliating questions…many many years later the culprits are sentenced with a few yrs in jail. That is success. They come out of jail , more hardened, ready to commit more heinous crimes. The victim, I hate using that word, is punished for life for no fault of hers.

We want to change this. Educating boys, sensitising them, mothers bringing up their sons more responsibly are all long term goals which should be started immediately. But now?? How do you deal with these culprits?? It is not just the question of punishing them . A clear message should be sent to the society that our law will not take such crime lightly and punishment is not meagre. The culprits should be hanged . Not just hanged, they should be hanged in public as early as possible. The punishment meted out should be highlighted in such a way, publicised in such a scale that a man cannot rise to rape. The fear should be instilled. We have seen that a simple traffic rule is not followed because the fear of getting caught is not there, and if caught the fear of punishment is not there. When there is no morals, the fear factor should be strong to instill righteous behaviour. Our society is not so evolved yet. Our jails are not reforming criminals. They are breeding them to say cynically. So a life sentence, chance to pardon should not be available to rapists. Punishment is not for revenge, is not only for the criminal, punishment is a message the society, to criminals in making.

I sincerely hope all our protests, requests, the sad state of the victim will lead to change in law so as to mete out death sentence to rapists.

yes, there is this deeply rooted logic in the minds of most men and also few women that women do provoke men, through her dressing or behavior in public with other men blah blah. I had to argue with my own brother, who believed in that “provocation theory”. But that theory is not fit for anything other than discarding, it is kind of justifying the act of rape with utterly immature logic.
And as far the punishment is considered, i don’t think killing is the right punishment for he doesn’t suffer enough and doesn’t live as a living example! One should be blinded and left to live of his life without eye sight and live his life as a walking reminder for people who would still want to rape!

It is very true.watching such enquiries in movies (like, DAMINI HINDI) itself is so ruthless, unkind way of judiciary. So when such true evidence of persons, act everything is there, Govt should hang them immediately. That too upcourse as you said publicly.

    I agree with your opinion.

Changing the outlook of the men, educating the heart of the children are all long term solutions. Immediate necessity is to bring stringent laws to punish the culprits and to deal with such cases in fast track courts.

My sincere advice to all women is – do not believe men – (whatever be their educational and social background – animal instinct still dominates their head and heart). Keep distance, dress up properly and behave with dignity and if possible learn some self defense techniques (Carry some chilly powder – it may come to some rescue). Be always vigilant and have control over the situations. No body is there to help us. We have to help ourselves.

couple of things i notice going by the article at the top of my mind are
    1) assumption that boys / men are the Only perpetrators. i would not think this as right. there has been instances where the advances of women towards BOYS and men are also documented. unfortunately this is never brought up. i would request / suggest to treat the perpetrators as gender neutral ( men / women ).
2)in terms of punishment , my point of view is to make sure the implementation of the law in terms of investigation is more thorough better its for the case. the assumption that all case are genuine is flawed and there should be a way out considering penalty for faulty investigation as well.

No doubt here that the crime in itself is defenitly heinious.
