The Indian film and television industry, Advertisement Industry and a vast network of NGOs who are engaged in documenting the life of social target groups are looking for fresh voices. There is a demand for out-of-the-box thinking, for directors, editors, script writers, camera men, sound engineers & other technicians who understand the art and craft of film-making.
Sahamtha Film Society, Mangalore. in association with Ambit Computers. Mangalore. is organizing a Ten days Film Making Workshop in Mangalore from May 19th to may 28th 2011.
The venue is ShanthiKiran Bajjodi. Near Nanthoor. Mangalore.
The fees are Rs. 10,000/- for the entire workshop inclusive of boarding and lodging. The workshop is residential.
RESOURCE PERSONS
The resource persons are drawn from parallel film industry from Bengalooru. Veteran film maker G Parameshawara will be the Chief Director of the workshop. Other experts are- Film editor: Shantahram from Bengalooru who has worked with Suvarna Kannada TV Channel & has edited a number of programs aired through all Kannada Channels., Experienced Sound Engineers who have worked in numerous telecast programs, Cameraman R Sudhakar, who has worked for many full length tele-feature films & a number of documentaries. Technicians from Bengaluru will help the participants understand the craft and techniques of film making.
PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE OFFERED
Students in the Filmmaking Workshop will have the opportunity of handling PD 170 cameras and DSR 400 Cameras independently. All students edit digitally using Final Cut Pro on Macintosh computers. Participants will also be made familiar with Premiere Pro editing software. All camera and equipment will be made available to the students. On hand operating experience of PD170 camera for a week
COURSE CONTENT
While the course is practical-oriented, the theory portion would help the students develop a sound understanding of the basics of story-telling and film-making. More than 75% of the time would be devoted to hands-on film-making, so that the students learn how to transform their ideas into films.
Participants will be taught about the following topics in theory sessions:
Brief history of film. Introduction to film & video formats.
Film Theory
Film semiotics, Structuralism, denotation & connotation, syntagmatic & paradigmatic, signs & symbols.
Introduction to Editing, sound recording and mixing.
Theory and viewing of selected film clippings. Linear and non-linear editing. Film and video editing. Editing aesthetics.
Sound recording: location recording, studio recording, music recording, dubbing, effects etc. Clap.
Film appreciation.
Film genres. Mise-en-scene, expressionism, impressionism, surrealism, psychoanalysis, Indian aesthetics, melodrama, songs, present Indian and Kannada films & serials.
Story & Script writing – Theory & Practical
Pitching of the idea, developing the plot, characterization & script writing will be practiced through lecture, writing & presentation of the script by participants & group discussions.
Production designing for students’ scripts – Theory & Practical
Director’s team: roles of the technicians. Scheduling and budgeting.
Shooting & Post Production Work of the Participants’ Films – Practical
The scripts evolved in the workshop will be shot. (Practical experience of shooting a film)
Editing and other postproduction works for the participants’ films (Practical Experience)
- Entire course will be interactive and conducted on students’ active participation in all the sessions.
- The participants will be provided with camera unit and tapes for shooting.
