SU. RAM. EKKUNDI [1923–1995]

Subbanna Ranganath Ekkundi was a well-known poet and he is famous from his excellent poetic style. After graduating B.A. (Hons.) Literature in the year 1944, Subbanna Ekkundi joined the Anandashram High School, Bankikodla as a teacher and retired as a Head Master of that institute in 1977. His poem ‘Ladhak Irali Nepa Irali’ written during the Second Indo-China war was well received. After his retirement, he was given a national award for teaching.

He was the author of many works of poetry and short stories. His work is described by an entry in the Encyclopaedia of Indian Literature. His poetry deals primarily with tradition Indian mythological and religious themes. ‘Subhadra’ , ‘Matsyagandhi’, ‘Kathan Kavyagalu’, ‘Bellakkigalu’- some of his popular poetry collections.’Neralu’-a prominent Collection of Short Stories. His ‘Bakulada Hoovugalu’ was widely applauded as outstanding poetical work in Kannada. ‘Ubhaya Bharati’, concerns the famous debate between the Hindu philosophers Adi Shankara and Mandana Mishra.

In 1970, Ekkundi was honoured with Soviet Land Nehru Award. He was also a recipient of Central Sahitya Akademi award for his poetry collection ‘Bakulada Hoovugalu’.
