Open letter to Aamir Khan
Move to dub the Bollywood actors TV show Satyameva Jayathe in Kannada has reignited a controversy that goes back to the Raj Kumar days
Dear Mr Perfectionist,
Apopular joke has it that if you remove the shoes of American soldiers, you can win a war against the US easily. They dont know how to walk barefoot.
Similarly, you can win any war against the Kannadigas by threatening dubbing, because dubbing kills Kannada.
Now,if you think this is a farfetched argument, then think again.Who taught the Karnataka village brides to wear ghagra-choli for wedding receptions Ekta Kapoor. If the satellite channels have invaded the Kannada courtyard and spread thick and wide the blanket of pan-Indian potpourris and no one is complaining, then it only goes to show that Kannadigas are open-minded to other cultures.
However,if a Ramanand Sagar tries to dub his Ramayana into Kannada and a Sanjay Khan attempts to dub his Tippu Sultan, then it surely signals a warning bell because it is like writing an obituary of any Kannada creative mind.
Frankly, its difficult to explain this to anyone who does not know or attempt to understand why way back in the 1960s Dr Raj Kumar, writers A N Krishnarao,M Ramamurthy,Krishnamurthy and other cultural giants protested against dubbing of other films in Kannada, which eventually prompted the government to bring a ban against it.Imagine a film like Ranadheera Kanteerava, produced by a cooperative floated by ace filmmakers like G V Iyer and Balakrishna and others, with Dr Raj Kumar in the lead failing miserably because dubbed films ruled the market in those days.
Now I am more curious to know what motivated you Mr Khan,of all the people,to attempt to dub a reality show like Satyameva Jayathe in Kannada You have a huge fan following in Karnataka and we do watch your Hindi films. We warmly welcomed you to Bangalore and threw open the doors of IIM for shooting 3 Idiots a first for 30 days, mind you.Anyone questioning the right to entertainment has absolutely no argument to present because anyone can watch you in any language and no one is stopping him or her.But why dub Why cant you produce it in Kannada and then dub it into Hindi Sounds weird Absolutely. Its the same Mr Khan, when you attempt the reverse.
SURVIVING IS AN ART
History has proved that whenever Kannada language and culture is under threat,it always has a way of overcoming it.In the bargain,it takes on some changes, accommodates certain new features, but emerges stronger.Kannada has survived the influences of Sanskrit,English,Tamil,Telugu and Urdu. But any such influence has been assimilated into the Kannada culture and never have we allowed it to completely rule over us.Call it a phobia or a sense of insecurity, but we know that cultural onslaughts always cause serious scars that refuse to heal.Dont grudge us any feeble attempt to save ourselves.I used the word feeble because we have witnessed what has happened to the Tamil channels that are happily dubbing everything under the sun, including Hollywood films and television soaps and slowly but surely they are occupying more slots than original works. If it can happen to Tamil entertainment industry, imagine what it would do to Kannada industry
Besides, what is so special about your serial that you are jumping the gun to dub it into Kannada Already the channel chiefs are making Kannada directors remake serials popular in other languages and the meetings between the chiefs and the directors are turning shorter and shorter as it only consists of handing over cassettes of the serials and giving instructions (orders) to just copy it.Our work-hungry directors are not daring to utter a single word against it and are coming home to just watch it and remake it.In fact, some production houses are employing transcribers and translators and their job is done. The rest is easy.
Tell the ignorant supporters of yours that Karnataka is today the biggest market for all kinds of entertainment from all over the world and we really dont mind buying a Rs 800 ticket to see a Telugu or Tamil hero jumping off a cliff tied with a rope that is erased at the editing table. We dont mind watching Mammootty deliver his dialogues in a heavily accented Kannada,we think it is cute.
But we do not want to watch you,or anyone else for that matter,mis-match lip sync and dialogue as we know what happens when a Bhajji calls Andrew Symonds teri maa ki and he thought he was being called a Monkey ! So Mr Khan, the smartest Khan,as the cliche goes, dont even dream of dubbing the show.

you said it……
good prathibha, m with u.
This is a pale and slaphappy article, the reasons cited does not match with what writer is trying to say.
Writer says> which eventually prompted the government to bring a ban against it>> FYI dubbing is not banned in Karnataka and not been banned by Karnataka govt. at all, because Karnataka is a democratic state, and it has fully functioning court of justice and not some fatwa court or a taliban court.
The writer fusspots about ghagra-choli being worn by Kannadigas but fails to notice that the film industry she is backing generously drapes its actors in Tamil dhotis, with a belt on the dhoti and mustache as thick as amazon forest( Ambarish) or a hero with hair-knot atop his head(Ravichandran) which is seen only in parts of Tamilnadu. Writer fails to understand that dubbing only changes the mis-understandable content into an understandable content to the viewer and after-all Karnataka is not a cultural island, whether someone dubs or not ekta kapoor’s ghagra choli continues to rule the soap opera land and who knows tomorrow next gen Kannadiga may start dressing like Marc Cherry’s Desperate Housewives, and if the writer doesn’t want this to happen, she and her clan can attempt to cut Karnataka like a piece of cake and try to place it in the center of Indian ocean. And cover all Kannadigas from top to toe in a sari and decorate her forehead with kumkum, 1/2 kg gold,1/4 ltr coconut oil and a yard of jasmine flower and praise her sanctity and would make Karnataka sanctum sanctorum of Kannadaness.
Writer is worried about lip-sync of a duubed content( which is job of a dubbed movie’s producer), but cleverly ignores the cultural synchronization of current Kannada cinema with Karnataka, and there by remains biased.
Dubbing is not banned in Karnataka but only not in practice for the last few decades, and why it is not done is because of the riotousness of the film industry on some of the studios which attempted dubbing, and Kannada Film Indusrty may think they have muscle power, but very shortly it will be trashed by someone, like whats happening to their creative power.
By saying>> Karnataka is today the biggest market for all kinds of entertainment from all over the world and we really dont mind buying a Rs 800 ticket to see a Telugu or Tamil hero jumping off a cliff tied with a rope that is erased at the editing table. We dont mind watching Mammootty deliver his dialogues in a heavily accented Kannada,we think it is cute.>> writer ironically but effectively referring the need for these pallid stuff and some hoarded wealth like nat geo, discovery, and many hollywood flicks in Kannada, it may be Casablanca or it could be Inception, Avatar or any silly movie a respectable culture should live it to the audience, and must learn to respect his right to choose rather being home ridden cultural extravagant.
Hail Kannada.
I am with you pratibha!
Uma
“We dont mind watching Mammootty deliver his dialogues in a heavily accented Kannada,we think it is cute” !
This was the biggest weakness of the movie ‘Shikaari’. I couldn’t digest Mammootty’s kannada accent. Neither can I digest any soothing voice dubbed for Amir Khan. I would like to watch(in fact hear) Amir Khan in his own voice!
I will never like to hear any other voice for even Amitab and Nan Patekar for that matter.
This comment is nothing to with the debate about dubbing 🙂
Prathibha’s arguments does not hold grain and there is nothing new in what she says.
Dubbing is allowed in other states, why not Karnataka? If we don’t compete with other language movies, how will we evolve into a mature film industry? We have to grab this threat as an opportunity to produce exceptional movies that compete with other language movies.
Dubbing is being prevented only for the benefit of a few greedy film producers. I am not here to convince anyone. I am well convinced that I have a need to watch quality content from all over the world in my language. And there are people who are ready to give it in my language. My concern is Kannada as it is fundamental.
The greatest irony of the dubbing challenge in Karnataka is that everywhere else in the world, where the issue is equally controversial, the nationalist, cultural or language conservationists DEMAND dubbing. As early as the 1930s, dubbing was the norm in France, Italy, Germany, and Spain. In France, Les Studios de Joinville was turned into a dubbing centre as part of a national agenda to protect the French language against the onslaught of Hollywood. But it was also to preserve the eminence of the French language amid a population used to listening to it in its own cinema.
In last 48 hours, 12800 people have watched Satya Meva Jayate dubbed in Kannada on Web. It is Very well dubbed in Kannada. Please see it and share it with other friends. Vested interests in Kannada TV and Film industry are refusing dubbing this programme in Kannada where as same is done in other Indian languages. In the bargain, Kannada speaking audience will lose out a chance to see the programme in the language they understand.
Oops, The video is no more available. Did the Govt ban it:D

@ಪ್ರವೀಣ್ ಸೂಡ
